If you do not have a plan, remember that the state has one for you, and it will not be your choice. The judge decides who takes care of your child. Relatives who love your kids can disagree about how they should be raised, and I have seen them fight in probate court over custody. Sometimes out of good intentions. Sometimes for the money, because whoever raises the child usually controls the finances. It is up to you to decide both.
What I Said
From my September 10 Parents Edition workshop at the Cambria Hotel in Calabasas, lightly edited for readability.
So if you don't have a plan, remember the state has the plan for you, which means that it's not gonna be your choice. The judge will decide who will be taking care of your child.
Relatives who love your kids can disagree on how they have to be raised. And I've seen situations when relatives fight in a courtroom, in probate court, over who will take custody of the child.
Sometimes it's from good intentions, but sometimes they could fight for money, because who usually takes care of the kid has control of the finances. So it is up to you to decide who will take care of your child and who will take care of the monetary side of it, and we'll talk about it further as well.
