Who Talks to the Bank When You Cannot?

September 25, 2026 Maria V. Primushko Parents Edition Workshop

If you cannot act, mentally or physically, who takes care of your mortgage? Who pays the power bill? Automatic payments are a good answer for a while, but who makes sure there is money in the account behind them? Someone has to talk to your bank, to Social Security, to your insurance, to the mortgage company. Someone may have to decide that the house has to be sold. Who has the power to do that?

What I Said

From my September 10 Parents Edition workshop at the Cambria Hotel in Calabasas, lightly edited for readability.

If you're not here, if you cannot act mentally or physically, who will take care of your mortgage? Who will pay your power bill? Insurance. But for how long? Who will make sure that there's enough money in the account from which automatic payments can be made?

Somebody has to talk to your bank, to Social Security, to your insurance, to the mortgage company. At a certain point, let's say there is a business decision that there's not enough money, the house has to be sold in order to supplement it and make sure proper arrangements are made. Who will have power to do that?
